Feb. 12, 2010

Final Stats

Incarnate Word defeated Texas A&M International University 3-1 in Heartland Conference action on Friday afternoon at Dustdevil Field.

UIW (8-1, 8-0) took an early 2-0 lead on a RBI single by Daniel Qualls and RBI fielder's choice out by Tyler Hicks in the second inning.

That would be all the offense UIW starting pitcher Kirk Jewasko would need. The Cardinal ace improved to 3-0 on the year after allowing one run on four hits in a 9-inning complete game effort. Jewasko struck out seven and walked two Dustdevil batters.

TAMIU (4-4, 4-4) did have several opportunities to put runs on the board but they did not do so.

The Dustdevils had runners on second and third with one out in the second inning but the threat ended on strikeouts by Ricky Hernández and Carlo Cordova. Rey Alvarez then hit a one-out double in the bottom of the third but he was picked off for the second out and the inning ended with a groundout by Chris Collazo.

Incarnate Word took a 3-0 lead on a RBI single by Steven Vidaurri in the top of the fifth. TAMIU scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of that frame on a RBI single by single by Alvarez.

Jewasko allowed only one hit after the fifth inning, a two-out infield single by Jacob Hernández in the ninth inning.

Jorge Guarneros (1-1) took the loss for TAMIU after allowing three runs on eight hits in a 6.0 inning outing.

The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow with a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
