Incarnate Word Sweeps TAMIU

Feb. 13, 2010

Final Stats

Incarnate Word swept Texas A&M International University in Heartland Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Dustdevil Field, winning game one 10-2 before wrapping up a three-game series sweep with a 2-1 win in game two.

UIW jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opener before TAMIU scored two runs in the fourth inning on a two-RBI single by Jacob Hernández. The Cardinals answered with two runs in the top of the fifth to stretch their lead to 8-2.

The Dustdevils had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the fifth but the threat ended on ground outs by Chris Collazo and James Santillan. TAMIU would get only one more runner in scoring position the rest of the game.

Mike McGillivray (1-2) took the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits in 3.1 innings.

TAMIU (4-6, 4-6 Heartland) received strong pitching performances from starter John Gonzáles and reliever B.J. Valadez in the second game but a lack of offense in critical situations prevented the Dustdevils from salvaging a win in the three-game series against the Cardinals.

Incarnate Word (10-1, 10-0) scored one run in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by Steven Vidaurri before Daniel Qualls led off the second inning with a solo home run to push the Cardinals to an early 2-0 lead. Collazo contributed a RBI double in the bottom of the second to put TAMIU on the board and cut the Incarnate Word lead to 2-1.

That would be all of the scoring TAMIU would achieve for the game, however, despite having many opportunities the rest of the contest.

The Dustdevils had runners on first and third with one out in the third inning when Enrique Granados hit into an inning-ending double play. In the eighth inning the Dustdevils had runners on first and second with one out before the threat ended on a fly out by Santillan and a strikeout by Ramon Sandoval.

TAMIU left eight runners on base in the loss, including six runners that advanced to scoring position.

Gonzáles (1-1) took the loss for TAMIU despite allowing only two runs in 7.0 innings. He struck out seven with no walks allowed. Valadez allowed no runs on two hits in 2.0 innings of relief work.
