Texas A&M International University split its opening two games at the Angelo State Blue & Gold Leafoff Classic on Saturday. The Dustdevils defeated Washburn 5-2 in the opener before losing to 6-3 to Incarnate Word in the second game.
Seven Dustdevil batters recorded hits in the win over Washburn with Victoria Beltrán and Samantha García leading the way with two hits apiece. García pushed TAMIU to a 2-1 lead with a RBI double in the third inning before opening the scoring in a decisive three-run fifth inning with another RBI double.
Beltrán (1-3) earned the win over Washburn with a complete game effort. She allowed two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks in 7.0 innings.
TAMIU (2-7) will face UT-Permian Basin and Angelo State in Sunday before wrapping up the tournament against West Texas A&M on Monday.
