Final Stats
UT-Permian Basin edged Texas A&M International University 58-55 in Heartland Conference action on Thursday night at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building.
TAMIU (4-21, 3-9 Heartland) held a 33-29 halftime lead but UT-Permian Basin (12-12, 6-5) started the second half with a 15-4 run to take a 44-37 lead at the 10:10 mark.
The Dustdevils battled back to take a 53-51 lead on a jumper by Johnna Williams at the 2:21 mark. UTPB then made its own comeback taking a 54-53 lead on a 3-pointer by Lauren Unger at the 1:34 mark.
Kiandra Metoyer turned the ball over on TAMIU's ensuing possession and Miesha Blackshear made two free throws after being fouled to push the Lady Falcon lead to 56-53.
Metoyer knocked down a jumper with 59 seconds left in regulation to cut the UTPB lead to 56-55. Tammy Acosta then made two free throws to increase UTPB's lead to 58-55 with 19 seconds remaining.
TAMIU had an opportunity for a last second shot to tie the score but Courtney Dixon's 3-point attempt was wide of the mark, allowing UTPB to escape with a road win.
Williams finished with a team-high 11 points and 3 blocks for the Dustdevils. Dixon led the squad with 8 rebounds.
TAMIU returns to action on Saturday with a home game against Oklahoma Panhandle State. Tip-off against the Lady Aggies is scheduled for 2 p.m.
