Feb. 26, 2010

Final Stats

Newman swept Texas A&M International University in Heartland Conference doubleheader action on Friday afternoon at Jorge Haynes Field. The Jets took the opener 10-5 before posting a 9-5 win in game two.

TAMIU pounded out 22 hits for the day but Newman was just a prolific, finishing with 27 hits. The Dustdevils struggled defensively with nine errors leading to seven unearned Jet runs.

Newman jumped out to a 5-2 lead after three innings in the opener. Luis Bracero cut the Jet lead to 5-4 with a two-out, two RBI triple in the bottom of the fourth inning but that's as close as the Dustdevils would get.

Newman put the opener out of reach with a four-run sixth inning.

Steven Treviño (2-2) picked up the win with a complete-game effort for the Jets. Jorge Guarneros (2-2) took the loss for the Dustdevils after allowing eight runs (five earned) on nine hits in 5.1 innings.

Matt Winter pushed TAMIU (5-11, 5-11 Heartland) to a 5-3 lead in the second game with a two-RBI single to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning. That would be the end of the scoring for the Dustdevils, however, with Newman (5-8, 5-7) securing the win with six runs scored over the final three innings.

TAMIU advanced only two runners into scoring position after the sixth inning against Newman relief pitcher Zach Biery.

Biery recorded the save and Brent McKinnon (2-2) was the winning pitcher for Newman after allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits in 5.2 innings.

Mike McGillivray (1-4) took the loss for TAMIU. He allowed six runs (four earned) on nine hits in 6.1 innings of work with four strikeouts and one walk.

TAMIU and Newman will conclude the series with a single game on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
