Final Stats
St. Edward's defeated Texas A&M International University 60-57 in Heartland Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building. It was the regular season finale for both teams.
Despite the loss the Dustdevils have qualified as the sixth seed for next week's Heartland Conference Tournament, which will be hosted by St. Mary's on Mar. 4-6. The position was clinched due to Ut-Permian Basin's 53-36 road win over Newman this afternoon.
TAMIU and Newman both finish with a 4-10 record in Heartland Conference play but the Dustdevils win the first tie breaker due to a two-game season sweep over the Lady Jets.
Both teams held six point leads in the second half in today's season finale, with St. Edward's (7-19, 5-8 Heartland) going up 33-27 on a jumper by Kelli Payton at the 18:10 mark. TAMIU (5-22, 4-10) went up 57-51 on a jumper by Mary Tobias at the 4:18 mark.
The Dustdevils would not score the rest of the game, however, allowing the Hilltoppers to claim the come-from-behind win. TAMIU missed eight field goal attempts over the final four minutes while St. Edward's made one layup and seven of 10 free throw attempts.
Senior Mary Tobias led the Dustdevils with 18 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals in her final home game as a Dustdevil. Another senior, Latreshe Jones, finished with 12 points and 5 rebounds and Linda Bañuelos contributed 10 points.
