Feb. 4, 2010

Final Stats

A late charge led Texas A&M International University to a 68-61 Heartland Conference win over Newman on Thursday night at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building. The result wraps up a two-game season sweep for the Dustdevils over the Lady Jets.

The first half was back-and-forth with three lead changes and four ties before and a jumper by NU's Monique Pitts with seconds remaining in the period led to a 37-37 tie at the break.

TAMIU (4-17, 3-5 Heartland) came out sluggish in the second half, allowing Newman to take a 48-43 lead midway through the period.

Senior Mary Tobias stepped up at that point, sparking a 17-5 run with back to back 3-pointers. She capped the run with a trey that pushed the Dustdevils to a 60-52 lead at the 4:56 mark.

Newman (5-16, 3-7) would get no closer than six points the rest of the game. Tobias put the game out of reach for the Lady Jets when she stole the ball and made two free throws after being fouled to give TAMIU a 66-55 lead at the 1:11 mark.

Tobias finished with 17 points, 7 steals and 4 assists. Johnna Williams also came up big, contributing 15 points and 8 rebounds. Courtney Dixon finished with 9 points and 6 rebounds. Newman out-rebounded TAMIU 44-30 but the Dustdevils finished with 19 steals and 22 turnovers compared to 15 steals and 30 turnovers for the Lady Jets.

TAMIU returns to action on Saturday with a home game against Lincoln. Tip-off against the Lady Blue Tigers is scheduled for 2 p.m.
