Dustdevils Sweep Aggies

Final Stats

Texas A&M International University swept Oklahoma Panhandle State in Heartland Conference doubleheader action on Saturday afternoon at Dustdevil Field. The Dustdevils won the opener 9-5 before posting an 8-2 win in game two.

TAMIU (3-2, 3-2 Heartland) trailed 3-1 in the opener before putting up four runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Enrique Granados delivered a two-RBI single in the fourth after the scoring was started with a bases loaded walk to Curtis Schell.

The Dustdevils scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning before the Aggies scored two runs in the top of the sixth to cut the TAMIU lead to 6-5.

The home team answered with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth to build a comfortable 9-5 lead going into the final inning. James Santillan and Rey Alvarez contributed RBI singles in the decisive inning with Santillan also scoring on a wild pitch.

Oklahoma Panhandle State's (1-4, 1-4) Alex Salquist hit a one-out single in the seventh but the game ended when the next two Aggie batters struck out and grounded out to first base.

John Gonzáles picked up his first win of the season in a relief role. He allowed two runs with one walk and four strikeouts in 5.0 innings.

TAMIU scored three runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the fifth inning to build an insurmountable 7-2 lead in the second game. Panhandle State pitchers assisted the Dustdevil effort with seven walks and two hit batters in those two innings.

TAMIU had only one extra bases hit in game two, a second inning two-out triple by Jason Bonugli. Ricky Hernández singled after a Matt Winter walk to drive Bonugli in and tie the score 1-1.

Mike McGillivray picked up a complete game win in his first start as a Dustdevil. He allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk in 7.0 innings.

McGillivray allowed no runs on one hit with only one Aggie batter reaching second base after TAMIU took a 5-2 lead after four innings.

The two teams will conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
