Feb. 7, 2010

Final Stats

Texas A&M International University and Oklahoma Panhandle State split a Heartland Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Dustdevil Field. OPSU took the opener 8-6 before TAMIU claimed a 3-1 series win with a 12-10 win the series finale.

Neither team did much offensively in the opener until the eighth inning. The game was tied 1-1 going into that extra fame with Oklahoma Panhandle scoring on an error in the first inning and TAMIU scoring on an error in the fourth inning.

OPSU then scored seven runs on four hits and two TAMIU errors in the top of the eighth to take an 8-1 lead.

TAMIU tried to make a comeback at that point. The Dustdevils scored five runs on two hits and two OPSU errors before Ricky Hernández hit into a game-ending double play.

Chris Villa (0-1) took the loss in a relief role after allowing four runs on two hits in 3.0 innings.

TAMIU (4-3, 4-3 Heartland) started slowly in the second game, with only a single in the first two innings, before erupting for a 9-run third inning to take a 9-3 lead. Rey Alvarez started the scoring in that frame with a RBI triple before capping it with a grand slam over the left field fence.

Oklahoma Panhandle (2-5, 2-5) did not quit and the Aggies scored three runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the sixth inning to cut the Dustdevil lead to 10-8. Curtis Schell provided a RBI single and Carlo Cordova a RBI sac bunt in the bottom of the sixth to push TAMIU back to a 12-8 lead.

OPSU scored two unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning after Luis Bracero misplayed a routine Aggie ground ball with two outs but the game ended when Danny Navarro struck out Colton McKithan.

Navarro was credited with the save after allowing those two unearned runs on two hits in 1.1 innings. Margarito Segovia (1-0) picked up the win in a relief role. He entered the game in the fourth inning and allowed two runs on three hits in 2.0 innings.

TAMIU returns to action next weekend with a three-game conference series against Incarnate Word. First pitch in Saturday's single game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
