Final Stats

Texas A&M International University remains undefeated in Heartland Conference play after sweeping Newman on Friday afternoon at Dustdevil Field. TAMIU won the opener 8-3 before posting an 8-0 win in game two.

Samantha García contributed a RBI single in the first inning of the opener and Alexis González came through with a two-RBI single in the second inning to push TAMIU to a 3-0 lead.

Newman scored two runs on three hits in the third inning to make it a one-run game but the Dustdevils came back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to build a comfortable lead.

Briana Sánchez went 3-for-4 in the opener with three RBI. Her two-RBI single in the fourth inning pushed TAMIU to a 6-2 lead and her RBI single in the sixth inning provided the Dustdevils an 8-3 lead.

Victoria Beltrán (4-5) earned the win in a complete-game effort for the Dustdevils. She allowed three runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and only three walks.

After failing to score in the first inning of the second game, TAMIU (9-15, 5-0 Heartland) would score in each of the next four innings to end the game after five innings due to the eight-run run rule. Dustdevil starter Clarissa Salinas did her part by pitching a shutout against the Jets.

TAMIU took the lead for good with a two-run second inning in game two. Janelle Ruiz gave the Dustdevils a 1-0 lead with a RBI single before González pushed the lead to 2-0 with a RBI bunt single.

Newman (0-5, 0-5) starter Erin Schmidt retired Salinas to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning before Marina Vasquez hit her second home run of the season to give TAMIU a 7-0 lead. The game ended three batters later when Ruiz scored on a wild pitch with Robyn Colin at the plate.

Salinas (3-4) allowed just two Jet hits in 5.0 innings. She struck out six batters with four walks.

The Dustdevils and Jets will conclude the series with a single game tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
