Final Stats
Texas A&M International University and Tarleton State split a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at the TSU Softball Complex in Stephenville. The Dustdevils won the opener 8-7 and the TexAnns won the second game 11-2.
TAMIU scored four runs on four hits in the third inning of the opener. The scoring in that frame started on a RBI single by Victoria Beltrán. Samantha García then came through with a two-RBI triple before scoring on an outfield error on that clutch hit to push TAMIU to a 4-1 lead.
The Dustdevils kept up the attack, scoring two runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings. TAMIU scored two unearned runs on fielder's choice RBI ground balls by Alexis González and Briana Sánchez in the fourth inning. Caitlin Barnes two-run homer in the fifth inning provided the Dustdevils an 8-5 lead.
Tarleton State scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut TAMIU's lead to 8-7 that that's as close as TSU would get. Marina Vásquez and Beltrán combined to shutout the TexAnns over the final two innings.
Beltrán earned her first save of the season while Clarissa Salinas (4-4) earned the win for the Dustdevils. She allowed seven runs (two earned) on 10 hits in 4.1 innings.
TAMIU finished with 10 hits in the win. Three Dustdevil errors lead to five unearned TexAnn runs scored.
Tarleton State (10-12) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump to a quick lead in the second game.
TAMIU (11-16) scored two unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning to cut TSU's lead to 3-2. The TexAnns stormed back to end the game, however, by the run rule after scoring eight runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Beltrán (4-6) was the losing pitcher for TAMIU. She allowed nine runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings of work.
TAMIU will continue its Spring Break trip with a non-conference doubleheader against 16th ranked West Texas A&M tomorrow in Canyon.
