Final Stats
Texas A&M International University and UT-Permian Basin split a Heartland Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Roden Field on the UTPB campus in Odessa. TAMIU took the opener 4-3 and UTPB won the series finale 13-6.
TAMIU recorded four hits and stranded three runners over the first five innings of the opener but UTPB led 2-0 going into the sixth inning. The first two TAMIU batters were retired in the sixth inning before Chris Collazo hit a single to start a string of five straight Dustdevil hits.
The five hits, four singles and a double, led to four Dustdevil runs. Josh Sepulveda and David Pittman contributed RBI singles and Enrique Granados came through with a two-RBI double in the go-ahead inning.
UTPB scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning off of TAMIU starter John Gonzáles but Gonzáles ended the threat by retiring two Falcon batters, on a pop up to second base and a ground out to shortstop, with the tying run at third base.
Gonzáles (2-4) earned the win with a complete game effort. He allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits in 7.0 innings. Gonzáles struck out three Falcon batters and allowed only one walk.
Max St. Hilaire and Collazo contributed RBI singles to provide TAMIU a 2-0 lead after three innings in the second game. UTPB took control of the game, however, by scoring 13 runs over the next three innings.
Rey Alvarez recorded a two-RBI single and Collazo a RBI single in a four-run seventh inning but it was not enough to force the game into extra innings.
B.J. Valadez (2-2) took the loss for the Dustdevils. He allowed seven runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings.
