Late Run Lifts Lady Falcons Past Dustdevils In Heartland Conference Quarterfinals

Texas A&M International University kept coming back against UT-Permian Basin in the Heartland Conference quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon at Bill Greehey Arena on the campus of St. Mary's University in San Antonio. Ultimately, however, the Lady Falcons made a late push to record a 79-68 win over the Dustdevils.

UTPB led by nine points twice in the first half, the second time on a layup by Miesha Blackshear that pushed the Falcons to a 46-37 lead with only nine seconds remaining in the period.

TAMIU had a chance at a final shot in the period and Latreshe Jones made it count, burying a 3-pointer from the right side of the arc to cut UTPB's halftime lead to 46-40.

The Dustdevils kept coming early in the second period, with a long-range 3-pointer by Mary Tobias tying the score 46-46 at the 18:15 mark.

UTPB went on an 8-0 run at that point o build a 54-46 lead at the 16:28 mark, setting up TAMIU's second comeback of the game. Christina Tristan cut the Falcon lead to 56-55 on a layup at the 13:40 mark.

UTPB's lead would expand 60-55 before TAMIU come back once again to get within one point, 60-59, on a jumper by Johnna Williams at the 9:34 mark.

Williams made a driving layup at the 8:08 mark to cut the Falcon lead to 66-63 but that's as close as TAMIU would get the rest of the game.

The Dustdevils were out of comebacks and UTPB clinched the win with an 11-0 run that led to a 77-63 lead at the 2:23 mark.

Williams contributed an outstanding all-around effort for the Dustdevils, finishing with 29 points, 14 rebounds, 4 blocks and 2 assists.

Tobias finished with 14 points and 4 assists in her final game as a Dustdevil and Kinadra Metoyer finished with a team-high 8 rebounds.

UTPB had four players score in double-figures, with Tammy Acosta finishing with a team-high 30 points. Blackshear led the Lady Falcons with 10 rebounds to go along with 17 points.
