Hilltoppers Sweep Dustdevils In Heartland Conference Action

St. Edward's swept Texas A&M International University in Heartland Conference doubleheader action on Friday afternoon at Jorge Haynes Field on the TAMIU campus. The Hilltoppers won the opener 3-0 before claiming a come-from-behind 11-4 win in game two.

SEU starting pitcher Brad Nasis (1-1) powered the Hilltoppers to the win with a complete-game two-hitter in the opener. Both hits were singles and TAMIU advanced a runner to second base only once, in the seventh inning. Nasis finished with six strikeouts and one walk.

Jorge Guarnernos (2-3) took the loss for the Dustdevils despite turning in a solid performance of his own. He allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks in 7.0 innings.

TAMIU (6-13, 6-13 Heartland) scored three runs on four hits in the third inning of the second game to build a 4-0 lead. Chris Collazo got the scoring started in that frame with a bases load walk. Rey Alvarez scored the second run on a wild pitch before Ramon Sandoval hit a RBI single.

The Dustdevils led 4-1 after five innings but SEU (10-10, 10-8) earned the win after erupting for five runs apiece in the sixth and seventh innings.

Chris Villa (0-2) took the loss in a relief role. He allowed two runs (none earned) on one hit in 0.1 innings. Villa entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the sixth inning.

Dustin Johnson (2-1) earned the win in a relief role for the Hilltoppers. He held the Dustdevils hitless for 3.2 innings after entering the game in the third inning.

The Dustdevils and Hilltoppers will conclude the series with a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
