Final Stats
Texas A&M International University opened Heartland Conference play with a doubleheader sweep over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Friday afternoon at Dustdevil Field. Both games ended after five innings because of the run rule with TAMIU winning the opener 8-0 and the second game 9-1.
TAMIU (6-13, 3-0 Heartland) hit four home runs over the first two innings of the opener to build a 7-0 lead, led by Victoria Beltrán's two-run homers in the first and second inning. Samantha Carrillo also homered in the first inning and Briana Sánchez in the second inning.
Beltrán (2-4) got the win for the Dustdevils with a complete-game one-hitter. She struck out five batters and allowed two walks.
The Dustdevil offense kept it up in the second game, jumping out to a 7-0 lead after three innings.
Carrillo got the scoring started with a RBI single in the first inning. Beltrán added a RBI double in the second inning and Angel Montejano contributed a RBI double in the third inning.
Marina Vásquez (2-6) earned the win after allowing no runs in one hit in 3.0 innings of work. She struck out four and allowed no walks.
The Dustdevils and Lady Aggies (2-13, 0-2) will conclude the series with a single game on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
