Newman Sweeps TAMIU In Heartland Conference Action

Newman swept Texas A&M International University in Heartland Conference action on Friday evening at McCarthy Field on the NU campus in Wichita, Kan. The Jets took the opener 5-4 before posting a 4-2 win in game two.

TAMIU took a 4-2 lead in the opener with a two-run fourth inning but Newman earned the come-from-behind win after scoring one run in the fourth and two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Dustdevils finished with eight hits in the loss but only one of those hits went for extra bases, a Zeke Sosa double. Sosa contributed both TAMIU RBI, on a single in the second inning and a double in the fourth inning.

Mike Swobada (0-2) took the loss in a relief role. He allowed two runs on two hits in 2.1 innings.

Newman (19-23, 18-20 Heartland) took the lead with a three-run third inning in game two. The Dustdevils cut the deficit to one run in the sixth inning after scoring on an error and RBI ground out by Max St. Hilaire.

Newman bumped the lead to 4-2 by answering with one run in the bottom of the sixth. The Dustdevils advanced runners to first and second base in the top of the seventh but the game ended on a pop out to shortstop by Luís Bracero.

TAMIU (13-29, 12-28) finished with five hits. Chris Collazo and Matt Winter finished with two hits apiece.

Mike McGillivray (3-6) was the losing pitcher for the Dustdevils. He allowed four runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings.
