Final Stats
Texas A&M International University and Newman split a Heartland Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Wichita, Kan. Newman won the opener 3-1 and TAMIU posted a 10-5 win in the series finale.
Ramon Sandoval hit a solo home run in the second inning of the opener to cut Newman's lead to 2-1. TAMIU would go hitless the rest of the game, however, and a Jet run in the bottom of the third inning would be all of the offense the home team would need.
The Dustdevils cut the Newman lead to 3-2 on a sac fly RBI by Zeke Sosa in the top of the seventh inning but the game ended on ground out to third base by Curtis Schell with the tying run on third base.
John Gonzáles (3-7) took the loss despite allowing only three runs on eight hits in 6.0 innings.
Luís Barcero capped a two-run third inning with a RBI single to push the Dustdevils to a 4-1 lead in game two. Newman answered with two runs in the bottom of that frame but TAMIU responded with a three-run fifth to build an insurmountable 7-3 lead. Curtis Schell capped off the scoring in the decisive inning with a two-RBI single up the middle.
TAMIU out-hit Newman 11-7 in the win. Bracero, Schell, Sandoval and Max St. Hilaire finished with two hits apiece. Schell led the Dustdevils with three RBI.
B.J. Valadez (4-3) earned the win for the Dustdevils. He allowed five runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings.
TAMIU (14-30, 13-29) returns to action with a non-conference home game against UT-Permian Basin on Tuesday at Jorge Haynes Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
