April 18, 2010

Final Stats

Incarnate Word swept Texas A&M International University in Heartland Conference doubleheader action on Sunday afternoon at Dustdevil Field. UIW won the opener 6-3 in 12 innings before taking game two 10-5.

TAMIU (20-25, 14-3 Heartland) remains in first place in the Heartland Conference standings despite the sweep, one game ahead of St. Edward's and St. Mary's in the win column.

UIW (24-18, 12-4) scored three runs on three hits in the top of the fifth inning of the opener to take a 3-0 lead. Alexis González contributed a RBI sac fly in the bottom of the fifth and Marina Vásquez placed a soft liner in shallow left field for a two-RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, allowing the Dustdevils to tie the score 3-3.

TAMIU's offense went cold at that point, going hitless over the next five innings. In the meantime, Incarnate Word stranded eight base runners on four hits before taking a 6-3 lead on a three-run home run to dead center field by Alex Carraman in the top of the 12th inning.

TAMIU went down in order in the bottom of the 12th inning, allowing Cardinal starter Briana Sánchez (19-6) to earn a complete-game win. Sánchez allowed three runs on six hits with 11 strikeouts and three walks in 12.0 innings.

Victoria Beltrán (9-9) took the loss in a relief role for the Dustdevils. She allowed three runs on seven hits in 7.1 innings.

A three-run home run by Lea Padilla and a solo shot by Melanie Padilla in the first inning of game two powered Incarnate Word to a 4-0 lead.

TAMIU fought back to tie the score 4-4, scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning and three runs in the third inning. Beltrán led off the third with a solo home run. Two UIW errors led to the other two runs scored in the inning.

Incarnate Word took a 6-4 lead with a two-run fourth inning. Beltrán cut the Cardinal lead to 6-5 with her second solo home run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning but that would be the end of the scoring for the Dustdevils.

Four TAMIU errors led to five unearned UIW runs scored against Vásquez and Clarissa Salinas. Two infield errors led to three unearned runs scored against Salinas in the top of the seventh inning.

Vásquez (5-9) took the loss for the Dustdevils. She allowed four earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 3.2 innings.

The Dustdevils and Cardinals will conclude the series with a single game tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
