Final Stats
Texas A&M International University and Incarnate Word split a Heartland Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Sullivan Field on the UIW campus in San Antonio. Incarnate Word won game one 6-5 and TAMIU knocked off the first place Cardinals 6-2 in game two.
Incarnate Word scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump to a quick lead in the opener. Max St. Hilaire cut the Cardinal lead to one run with a two-run home run to center field in third inning. The Dustdevils then took a 5-3 lead in the top of the fourth on the strength of a RBI single by Rey Alvarez and a two-RBI single by Josh Sepulveda.
UIW scored once apiece in the fourth and seventh innings to tie the game 5-5. The Cardinals then loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, setting up a game-winning single by Drew Hamilton.
TAMIU finished with 10 hits in the loss with St. Hilaire leading the way with three hits.
Chris Villa (0-3) took the loss in a relief roll. He allowed two runs on three hits in 4.1 innings.
TAMIU (11-23, 10-23 Heartland) was the team to jump to a quick lead in game two. Matt Winter contributed a RBI double and Curtis Schell furnished a two-run home run in the second inning to push the Dustdevils to a 3-0 lead.
Incarnate Word (24-9, 23-7) scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning but the Dustdevils maintained the lead before putting the game away with a three-run fifth inning. St. Hilaire capped the fifth with a RBI double. His clutch hit was preceded by a RBI double by Luís Barcero and a RBI single by Alvarez.
Mike McGillivray (3-4) earned the win for the Dustdevils with a complete game effort. He allowed two runs on 11 hits in 7.0 innings. McGillivray allowed no Cardinal batter to reach second base after over the final three innings.
The Dustdevils and Cardinals will conclude the season series with a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
