Hilltoppers Sweep Dustdevils In Heartland Conference Action

St. Edward's swept Texas A&M International University in Heartland Conference action on Friday afternoon at Lucien Hamilton Field on the SEU campus in Austin. The Hilltoppers won game one 12-0 before posting a 7-2 win in game two.

St. Edward's took control of game one early, scoring five runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning. The Hilltoppers then scored twice in the second inning to build a 7-0 lead.

TAMIU managed six hits but got only one runner to third base. The Dustdevils stranded eight base runners in the loss.

Mike McGillivray (3-7) took the loss for TAMIU. He allowed 10 runs on 13 hits in 4.1 innings.

TAMIU managed eight hits in game two but struggled with runners in scoring position. The Dustdevils stranded six base runners, four of them in scoring position, before breaking through for two runs in the seventh inning to cut SEU's lead to 5-2.

The Dustdevils would go hitless the rest of the game, however, and SEU scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the game out of reach.

John Gonzáles (3-8) kept TAMIU in the game with a gritty pitching performance in which he allowed three earned runs on seven hits in 7.0 innings. Gonzáles struck out eight batters and allowed only one walk.

The Dustdevils and Hilltoppers will conclude the series with a single game tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
