April 29, 2010

Final Stats

Texas A&M International University needed all of the offense it could muster in Thursday morning's Heartland Conference Tournament opener against UT-Permian Basin, played at St. Edward's University in Austin. The Dustdevils finished with 14 hits in a 13-11 win over the Lady Falcons, a win that mark's TAMIU's first postseason win in the three year history of the program.

Victoria Beltrán hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Angel Montejno contributed a RBI double in the second inning to help push TAMIU to a 5-0 lead.

The game was far from over at that point, however, with the Dustdevils and Lady Falcons combining for 15 runs over the next two innings with the result being a 10-10 tie after four innings of play.

TAMIU relief pitcher Beltrán then retired UTPB in order in the top of the fifth inning and the Dustdevils took a 13-10 lead with a three-run bottom of that frame. Beltrán's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth preceded a two-RBI single by Clarissa Salinas.

UTPB scored a run on a wild pitch in the sixth inning to cut TAMIU's lead to 13-11 but that's as close as the Lady Falcons would get.

Beltrán (10-11) picked up the win in a relief role. She allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits in 3.2 innings of work with seven strikeouts and only one walk allowed.

Beltrán, Salinas and Briana Sánchez finished with three hits apiece for the Dustdevils. Beltrán notched four RBI with Sánchez and Montejano finished with three RBI apiece.

TAMIU will play top-seeded St. Edward's in game three of the tournament this afternoon. First pitch should take place around 2:45 p.m.
