Final Stats
Incarnate Word swept Texas A&M International University in Heartland Conference action on Saturday afternoon in San Antonio. The first place Cardinals won the opener 14-2 before posting a 2-1 win in the series finale.
TAMIU recorded 12 hits in the opener but only one of those hits went for extra bases. The Dustdevils stranded 14 base runners in the loss. Incarnate Word finished with 18 hits with seven of those going for extra bases.
John Gonzáles (2-6) took the loss after allowing five earned runs on eight hits in 1.1 innings.
Max St. Hilaire pushed TAMIU to a 1-0 lead in game two with a RBI single in the first inning. The Dustdevils held the 1-0 lead and had a chance to add to it after loading the bases with two outs in the fifth inning but the threat ended on a strikeout by Chris Collazo.
Incarnate Word (26-9, 25-7 Heartland) tied the score on a RBI single by Tyler Hicks in the bottom of the fifth inning. The score remained tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning.
The first three Cardinal batters in the seventh reached base on a walk, infield single and walk against TAMIU (11-25, 10-25) relief pitcher Mike Swoboda. Chris Villa then relieved Swoboda but Villa walked Steven Vidauaurrilf, allowing the home team to record a come-from-behind win.
Swoboda (0-1) took the loss for the Dustdevils. He allowed one run on one hit in 1.2 innings of work. Starting pitcher B.J. Valadez turned in a solid outing, allowing one run on five hits in 4.1 innings.
