Final Stats
Texas A&M International University and St. Mary's split a Heartland Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Jorge Haynes Field. TAMIU took the opener 3-0 and St. Mary's won game two 6-4.
Starting pitcher Mike McGillivray (4-7) led the Dustdevils to a game one win with a complete-game gem. He scattered four hits, all singles, and did not allow a hit over the final two innings. McGillivray struck out a season-high eight batters while allowing only two walks.
Carlo Cordova provided TAMIU a 1-0 lead with a RBI single in the second inning. The Dustdevils pushed the lead to 3-0 with a couple of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Rey Alvarez accounted for the first run in the sixth with a RBI sac bunt with one out and runners on first and third base. The second run was scored on a RBI single to left field by Zeke Sosa.
St. Mary's (37-15, 33-13 Heartland) scored two runs in the top of the third inning of game two to push to a 6-0 lead.
TAMIU starting chipping away at the lead at that point, cutting the Rattler lead to 6-2 on a two-RBI single by Sosa in the third inning. The Dustdevils then cut the deficit to 6-4 with a two-run fourth inning.
Chris Collazo started the scoring in the fourth with a two-out RBI double. He would then score from second base on a wild pitch and throwing error from the catcher to third base on the same play.
TAMIU (15-35, 14-33) kept coming, loading the bases with only one out in the bottom of the sixth inning but the threat ended on consecutive strikeouts by Sosa and Curtis Schell.
TAMIU out-hit St. Mary's 13-11 but stranded 12 base runners compared to six stranded by the Rattlers.
John Gonzáles (3-9) took the loss for the Dustdevils. He allowed six runs on 11 hits in 6.1 innings.
TAMIU and St. Mary's will conclude the regular season with a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
