Note: Pitcher Victoria Beltrán and third baseman Angel Montejano were named to the 2010 Heartland Conference All-Tournament Team. The team was selected by the five participating head cocahes.
Texas A&M International University's deep run into the Heartland Conference Tournament ended with a 4-2 loss to St. Edward's on Friday afternoon at Diane Daniels Field on the SEU campus in Austin. The Dustdevils fell just one game short of advancing to Saturday's championship round.
TAMIU knocked Incarnate Word out of the tournament with a 4-3 win over the Lady Cardinals earlier on Friday.
UIW held a 2-1 lead over the Dustdevils when Clarissa Salinas pushed TAMIU to a 3-2 lead with a two-RBI single in the fourth inning. The Lady Cardinals tied the score 3-3 with a run in the top of the sixth inning but TAMIU retook the lead in the bottom of the frame when Janelle Ruiz scored a run on a throwing error by the UIW catcher after stealing third base.
TAMIU relief pitcher Victoria Beltrán retired the first two Lady Cardinal batters she faced in the top of the seventh before walking Caroline Flores. The game ended, however, when Beltrán retired leadoff hitter Chelsea Muskopf on a ground out to third base.
Beltrán (11-11) earned the win after allowing no hits on one hit in a 3.1 inning outing.
St. Edward's (34-20) jumped out to a 2-0 before TAMIU (22-31) got on the board on a sac fly RBI by Samantha Carrillo in the third inning. The Dustdevils went hitless over the next three innings, allowing SEU to build a 4-1 lead.
Two St. Edward's errors and a hit batter in the top of the seventh inning set-up a RBI single by Ruiz that cut SEU's lead to 4-2. The bases were loaded at that point with one out but the threat, and game, ended on a strikeout by Beltrán and a ground out to third base by Carrillo.
Beltrán (11-12) took the loss for the Dustdevils. She allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits in 5.1 innings with three strikeouts and three walks.
