Cano Lifts Dustdevils Over Jets

Sept. 19, 2010

Final Stats

Jaime Cano came off the bench to score two goals in Texas A&M International University's 2-1 Heartland Conference win over Newman on Sunday at Dustdevil Field. The positive result extends TAMIU's win streak to three games and pushes the Dustdevils to a 2-0 mark in league play.

Cano provided TAMIU (4-2, 2-0) a 1-0 lead when he lifted a shot over Newman goalkeeper Robin Allard from 12 yards out in the 46th minute. Newman (2-3, 1-2) tied the game on a goal off of a deflected save by TAMIU goalkeeper Emmanuel Frias in the 53rd minute before Cano scored the game-winner on a header from 10 yards out in the 64th minute.

Luís Salas was credited with the assist on both of Cano's goals.

Both teams had a couple of legitimate scoring opportunities after TAMIU took the 2-1 lead but solid goalkeeping on both ends of the field kept the score at that margin. Newman's Allard finished with seven saves with Frias contributing six saves for the Dustdevils.

TAMIU returns to action next weekend with a couple of tough road games. The Dustdevils will play a non-conference game at 10th ranked Incarnate Word on Friday before heading to Austin for a showdown against Heartland Conference rival St. Edward's on Sunday.

SEU and TAMIU were picked to finish one-two in the Heartland Conference preseason poll. The Hilltoppers lead the all-time series against the Dustdevils 6-1-1 but TAMIU notched a 2-1 win in the last meeting between the two teams, on Nov. 6, 2009 in Laredo.
