Texas A&M International University opened Heartland Conference play with a 2-0 win over St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon in San Antonio. The result was the 100th career win for head coach Claudio Arias, who now stands with 100-82-9 record at the beginning of his 11th season as a head coach.
TAMIU (1-1, 1-0 Heartland) won the game on the strength on two second half goals, by Abel Villvicencio in the 55th minute and Edgar Flores in the 75th minute.
St. Mary's (1-1, 1-1) out-shot TAMIU 19-10 but Dustdevil goalkeeper Chuy Cisneros was up to the challenge, making 12 saves. He made nine of those saves in the second half.
Arias says he is glad to reach the milestone win but feels there are more important things to focus on.
"First of all I could never had done this without the support of my family and the great players I have coached," Arias said.
"It's nice to reach 100 but I'm not going to spend too much time thinking about it. This team has some lofty goals and we're going to work hard to make this a special season."
