Dustdevils Improve Heartland Conference Mark To 3-1 With 81-60 Win Over Oklahoma Panhandle State

Texas A&M International University closed out a season-opening four-game Heartland Conference homestand with an 81-60 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday afternoon at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building.

TAMIU (13-5, 3-1 Heartland) held a 18-13 lead at the 7:40 mark of the first half before ending the period with a 21-9 run to take a 39-22 lead at the break. Ryan McLucas made a steal on one end of the court and a lay-up on the other end to give TAMIU a 27-13 lead at the 5:14 mark and Will Faiivae pushed that lead to 35-18 with a reverse lay-up at the 1:28 mark.

The Dustdevils kept it coming early in the second half, taking a 47-24 lead on a dunk by James Silvie at the 15:18 mark. OPSU (3-13, 0-2) would cut the Dustdevil lead to 19 points but TAMIU expanded the lead to 65-37 on a 3-pointer by McLucas at the 7:29 mark. The Aggies would get no closer than 19 points the rest of the way.

TAMIU had its best shooting night of the season in the win, making 28 of 43 field goal attempts (65.1 %). The Dustdevils limited OPSU to 21 of 49 shooting (42.9 %).

Faiivae made nine of 11 field goal attempts to lead the Dustdevils with a season-high 21 points. Luís Gómez and Evan Matteson contributed 10 points apiece with Matteson contributing a team-high five rebounds.

Jermaine Smith led OPSU with 11 points and five rebounds.
