Goodwell, Oklahoma - The Dustdevils offense was balanced and efficient Thursday night hitting .404 as a team, as Texas A&M International University (11-12, 5-3 HC) blanked Oklahoma Panhandle State (3-22, 0-8 HC) 25-15, 25-14 and 25-16. With the win, TAMIU moves into sole possession of third place in the Heartland Conference standings with a record of 5-3. The Dustdevils also picked up their 11th win of the season, tying their total number of wins over the last three years combined.
"There are several areas where we could have executed better," said Head Coach Al Givens, "But we will take this win and get ready for a war with U.T. Permian Basin. They just knocked off St. Mary's in straight sets and everyone in our conference plays tough on their home court."
Five players finished with hitting percentages over .500, as the Dustdevils overwhelmed the Aggie defense. Andrea Marshall (Junior, Clinton, AZ) led the way finishing with a game-high 8 kills. Katrina Zenz (Freshman, Canby, OR) threw down six kills hitting .556, Daria Winckler (Junior, Zillah, WA) finished with five kills hitting .833, Jacquelynne Matula (Junior, Corpus Christi, TX) had 4 kills hitting .600 and Miranda Pratt (Sophomore, North Bend, WA) picked up 3 kills hitting .500. In the opening set the Dustdevils fell into a quick hole, dropping the opening three points. They rallied to take a 13-12 lead, before Andrea Marshall went on a six-point service run to give TAMIU a 19-12 advantage. The Dustdevils closed the game on a 6-3 run to take the opening set 25-15.
The Dustdevils opened the second set with an 11-2 lead, thanks to service runs by Alex Ciszek, Katrina Zenz and Daria Winckler. The deficit would be too much for the Aggies to overcome, as TAMIU took a 2-0 lead, winning 25-14.
TAMIU once again got out to an early lead in the final set 4-0, but this time OPSU would fight their way back in tying the game at 15. Two service runs by Alex Ciszek and Cassandra Medina would finish off the Aggies for good, as the Dustdevils closed the game on a 10-1 run winning the final set 25-16.
TAMIU has one final game remaining on their road trip versus U.T. Permian Basin Saturday, October 15th, before returning home to host non conference opponent Texas A&M Kingsville.
