Final Stats
Laredo, Texas - The Texas A&M International University men's soccer team continued their march towards an NCAA Tournament birth Saturday afternoon, battling regional foe West Texas A&M to a 1-1 draw at Dustdevil Field.
Both teams came out tentative in the opening half, doing their best to get a feel for each other. Neither team was able to find the back of the net and the game went into the break knotted at zero.
The Buffaloes struck first in the 70th minute when Conrad Gouldbourne fired a shot from inside the box past TAMIU keeper Jesus Cisneros. The scoring play was set up by a West Texas A&M corner kick that was re-directed by Aidan Hamman to a waiting Gouldbourne.
TAMIU tallied an equalizer just three minutes later, when Arturo Gutierrez headed in a nicely played cross from midfielder Jovany Macias. The goal was Gutierrez' third on the season, while Macias picked up his team leading fourth assist of the year.
Both defenses went into lock down mode from that point on and neither team would be able to score again, sending the game into overtime.
Despite being outshot in the extra periods 4-2, the TAMIU defense was able to hold solid and end the game in a 1-1 draw. Keeper Jesus Cisneros finished with four saves on the night.
The Dustdevils move to 7-2-2 on the season with six games still remaining on the schedule. Wednesday, October 19th the team travels to San Antonio to take on St. Mary's followed by another road contest Friday, October 21st versus U.T. Permian Basin.
