Final Stats
San Antonio, Texas - The Dustdevils defense held strong for 92 minutes against the 12th ranked team in the country, but an overtime goal by Ivan Yanez gave Incarnate Word a 1-0 win over Texas A&M International University. Heartland Conference defensive player of the week Emmanuel Frias was spectacular in net for TAMIU, picking up six saves on the night including two magnificent finger-tip stops.
The Dustdevils were outshot by the Cardinals 16-2 in the match, including a 2-0 advantage in overtime. Spaniards Joan Vallejo and Diego Manzano-Cano fired TAMIU's two shots.
The Cardinal defense swarmed early on, holding the Dustdevils to zero shots in the first half. The TAMIU defense was equally aggressive limiting Incarnate Word to only four shots in the opening half.
The Cardinal offense found its groove in the second half, outshooting TAMIU 10-2, including seven corner kicks. Emmanuel Frias made great play after great play, tallying four saves in the second half and pushing the game into golden-goal overtime.
In the 93rd minute during a Cardinal attack, the Dustdevil defense misplayed a clearing attempt setting up Ivan Yanez with a clean shot on goal. Frias dove to his right trying to pick up yet another jaw-dropping save, but the ball sailed passed his outstretched arms, ending the match in heartbreaking fashion.
The Dustdevils overall record slips to 9-3-2 on the season, but the team remains atop the Heartland Conference with a perfect 5-0 record. The team is back on the pitch Sunday, October 30th traveling to Austin, Texas to take on St. Edwards University.
