Final Stats

Austin, Texas - Sunday afternoon the Texas A&M International University Men's Soccer Team (10-3-2, 6-0 HC) clinched their second consecutive Heartland Conference Championship, knocking off St. Edwards University (4-8-4, 2-4-1 HC) 2-1. Elkin Marin-Tobar picked a great time to score his first goal of the season, tallying the game winner for the Dustdevils in the 49th minute.

"I want to thank God for allowing us to defend and retain our conference championship," said Head Coach Claudio Arias. "I am proud of our boys and happy for their accomplishments."

Tobar and Luis Salas scored goals for TAMIU, as the Dustdevils outshot the Hilltoppers 12-9, including a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. Keeper Emmanuel Frias was strong in net once again, turning away four Hilltopper shots and picking up his seventh win of the season.

Salas gave TAMIU the early advantage scoring a goal in the 18th minute. The senior took the pass off a free kick by Tobar and fired a low shot past the keeper on the far post. The goal was the only score of the first half and the Dustdevils took a 1-0 advantage into the break.

The Hilltoppers came out firing in the second half, getting an equalizer from midfielder Colton Stymiest in the 46th minute. After a turnover by Frias, Stymiest buried a shot from 15 yards out to tie the game at one.

Just four minutes later, TAMIU would answer as Tobar put the Dustdevils up for good. Hilltoppers keeper John Kaschak misplayed a cross into the box and Tobar was there to send it home.

The Dustdevils have two conference games remaining in the regular season; both will be played at Dustdevil Field. TAMIU will host U.T. Permian Basin November 1st and conclude with Newman on November 4th.
