Women's Basketball Takes Tough Loss To Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Savannah Carver poured in a game high 23 points for Midwestern State Saturday evening, as the Mustangs routed the Texas A&M International University Women's Basketball Team 98-76 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Neither team was able to build a sizable lead in the opening half which featured four ties and four lead changes. Rosebud Guthrie gave the Dustdevils some breathing room with 5:36 remaining, connecting on a driving layup to give TAMIU a five point lead 30-25. Sparked by a Carver three-pointer and several trips to the free-throw line, the Mustangs closed the half on an 18-8 run taking a 43-38 lead into the break.

Midwestern State came out of the half ready to play dropping a 12-0 run on the Dustdevils, improving their advantage to 55-38. The Mustangs would force 17 TAMIU turnovers in the second half, pushing that lead all the way out to 27 points with 3:25 remaining and TAMIU was never able to recover.

Midwestern State forced the Dustdevils into 25 turnovers, picking up 27 points off those lapses. The Mustangs also out-rebounded TAMIU 24-to-15 on the offensive glass, scoring 27 second chance points.

Angie Villanueva led the Dustdevils offensive attack, dropping in 15 points, adding two steals and five rebounds. Amanda Mangan finished with eleven points on a great shooting night, 2-for-2 from beyond the arc and 3-for-4 from the field. Re'Nikia Meshack and Jennifer Johnson also had nice contributions finishing with ten points apiece.

The Dustdevils return to Laredo to kick off a two-game home stretch hosting Incarnate Word November 14th and Abilene Christian November 17th.
