KINGSVILLE, Texas - Texas A&M Kingsville forced the Texas A&M International University Men's basketball team into 25 turnovers and ripped down 16 offensive boards, en route to a 62-47 win over the Dustdevils Tuesday night.
The loss is TAMIU's second straight to the Javelinas, with the previous coming in the second day of the Heartland/Lone Star Crossover Tournament in Laredo last weekend.
The Dustdevils shot 37.5 percent from the field and connected on 10-of-15 free throws, but couldn't get things working from three-point range going 1-for-14 on the night.
"We have to have better practice habits and focus on the details," said Head Coach Shane Rinner. "We have to have guys step up in areas of leadership, toughness and teamwork."
Neither team was able to get into an offensive rhythm early, and TAMIU trailed 12-to-9 with just over nine minutes remaining in the opening half. Sulaiman Sekamwa provided a spark off the bench for the Javelinas, scoring seven points in the first half and finishing with a game high 14. Texas A&M Kingsville pulled away late in the half, taking a 30-to-18 advantage into the break.
The Javelinas opened the second half with a 15-2 run, extending their lead out to 26 points. This time there would be no comeback for TAMIU as A&M Kingsville wouldn't allow the Dustevils to get within 20 points until less than two minutes remained in the game.
Evan Matteson led TAMIU with ten points, five rebounds and two bocks. Ryan McLucas chipped in six points, seven rebounds and four steals. Coming off the bench, Brian Schaeffer kicked in eight points and five rebounds.
The Dustdevils continue their road trip this weekend heading to Odessa for the U.T. Permian Basin Classic. TAMIU will take on West Texas A&M November 18th and Abilene Christian November 19th.
