Men's Basketball Cruises Past Arlington Baptist

LAREDO, Texas - The Texas A&M International University Men's Basketball team had no problems handling Arlington Baptist College Saturday afternoon, winning 97-46 behind another big effort from guard Brian Schaeffer. The win is the fifth in six games for TAMIU and capped off a perfect 2-0 weekend for the Dustdevils at the second annual La Posada Classic.

After scoring a career high 24 points versus Hillsdale Freewill Baptist on Friday, Schaeffer poured in 16 Saturday afternoon to lead all scorers. The senior was locked in all game long, finishing 5-8 from the field, shooting 3-6 from three-point range, committing zero turnovers and picking up seven assists.

Sophomore Joe Reid had a spectacular night scoring 14 points without missing a shot. Reid finished 7-7 from the field and also grabbed a game high eight rebounds. Three additional Dustdevils scored in double-digits including Ryan McLucas with 13, Tyree Murray with 11 and Ian Salter with 10. TAMIU shot 60.3 percent from the field and 43 percent from beyond the arc.

The Dustdevils got off to a sluggish start and fell behind early in the game 4-0. Coach Rinner quickly went to his bench bringing in Ian Salter and Joe Reid who made an immediate impact. With the game tied at four, Salter and Reid combined for a 9-2 run giving TAMIU a 13-6 lead. The Dustdevils would continue the run thanks to their trademark high intensity defense, extending their lead to 36-9. At the half, TAMIU held a commanding 51-17 lead.

The Patriots opened the second half with a 5-0 run but the Dustdevils were relentless, extending their lead to 55 points at one point.

The Dustdevils improve to 6-3 on the season and get a much needed break before they are back on the court. Saturday, December 10th the Dustdevils will travel to Edinburg, Texas to face off with Division-I U.T. Pan-American.
