Dustdevils Split Season-Opening Doubleheader With Texas A&M-Kingsville

Texas A&M International University and Texas A&M-Kingsville split a season-opening doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Hubert Field in Kingsville. The home team won the opener 3-2 in eight innings and TAMIU won the second game 4-0.

TAMUK took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the opener before TAMIU tied the score on a RBI single by Angel Montejano and fielder's choice RBI ground out by Rochelle Nash in the top of the second inning. The game then settled down into a pitching dual with Kingsville winning it on a two-out RBI single in the bottom on the eighth inning.

Clarissa Salinas pitched five strong innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits. Victoria Beltrán (0-1) took the loss in a relief role for the Dustdevils.

TAMIU got all of the scoring it would need early in game two. Alexis González scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning before Samantha García pushed the lead to 3-0 with an two-run home run in the top of the second inning. Janelle Ruiz scored another unearned run in the fourth inning to stretch the lead to 4-0.

Freshman Kyndall Reaves (1-0) earned a complete-game shutout win in her first collegiate start. She allowed seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Reaves limited TAMUK to five runners reaching scoring position with none of them advancing past second base.
