TAMIU Gets Past St. Edward's To Start Second Half Of Heartland Conference Race

Texas A&M International University wrapped up a season sweep of St. Edward's with an 82-75 win over the Hilltoppers on Thursday night in Austin. The result keeps TAMIU alone in second place in the Heartland Conference standings with a 5-2 league record.

SEU (7-12, 1-6 Heartland) jumped out to an early 16-8 lead but TAMIU (15-7) fought back to take a 37-31 halftime lead. SEU led 27-26 at the 3:24 mark of the first half before the Dustdevils finished the period with an 11-4 run to take a six-point lead at the break.

TAMIU led by a comfortable margin most of the second half. The Dustdevils took a 46-35 lead on a 3-pointer by Luís Gómez at the 15:32 mark and a 65-50 lead on a free throw by Ryan McLucas at the 5:15 mark.

SEU cut the deficit to 73-68 on two free throws with 56 seconds remaining but James Silvie scored on a fast break dunk on TAMIU's ensuing possession, sparking a frantic 9-7 run for the Dustdevils over the 55 seconds of regulation.

TAMIU shot well in the win, making 29 of 47 field goal attempts (61.7 %) and 7 of 11 3-pointers (63.6 %). The Dustdevils finished with a 28-25 rebounding edge over the Hilltoppers.

Gómez led the squad with 22 points while Will Faiivae finished with 18 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Evan Matteson contributed 12 points.
