Final Stats
Texas A&M International University erased a seven-point deficit with less than five minutes left in regulation to come away with a 64-60 win over St. Edward's on Thursday night in Austin. The win gives the Dustdevils a two-game season-sweep over the Hilltoppers while also providing TAMIU a two-game lead over SEU for the fourth and final spot in the upcoming Heartland Conference Tournament.
TAMIU (6-17, 3-3 Heartland) led 25-20 at halftime but SEU (8-13, 1-5) started the second half with an 18-3 run to take a 38-28 lead at the 14:23 mark. TAMIU cut the deficit to two points after that but SEU stretched its lead to 54-47 on a jumper by Sarah Milewski at the 4:47 mark.
Samantha Chacon hit a 3-pointer on TAMIU's next possession to spark a steady comeback for the resilient Dustdevils.
Nikkiti Scott hit a jumper to give TAMIU a 57-56 lead at the 1:33 mark but the game was far from over at that point. The Dustdevil lead would stretch to five points on two free throws by Johnna Williams with 23 seconds remaining in regulation but SEU's Stephanie Dekkers cut the deficit to 62-60 on a 3-pointer with eight seconds left in the game.
St. Edward's fouled Angie Villanueva on the ensuing in-bounds pass but the freshman from Laredo was up to the challenge, sinking two free throws to push the Dustdevils to two-possession, 64-60 lead. SEU got off another shot but it was too little, too late for the home team.
TAMIU made four of four and field goal attempts and eight of 10 free throw attempts starting with Chacon's 3-pointer that started the comeback.
Scott led TAMIU with 17 points, scoring eight of those points in the final five minutes. Johnna Williams contributed another double-double, finishing with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
