Texas A&M International University opened play at the Best Western Premier Crown Chase Spring Fling with an one-sided 18-7 win over Cameron on Friday afternoon at Pioneer Field on the campus of Texas Woman's University in Denton. The run total is highest ever against a NCAA Division II opponent with the previous high of 17 runs being scored against Newman on Mar. 8, 2008.
TAMIU (10-14) got the scoring started early, with Samantha García and Victoria Beltrán hitting solo home runs from the leadoff and third spot in the lineup in the bottom of the first inning. Marina Vásquez added a RBI single later in the first inning to provide the Dustdevils a 3-0 lead.
The Dustdevils put the game out of reach in the second inning by sending 14 hitters to the plate and scoring 11 runs on four hits. García got the scoring started in that frame with a three-run homer and Alexis González capped the scoring with a three-run blast over the fence.
Vásquez (1-0) earned the win for the Dustdevils. She allowed seven runs (four earned) on nine hits in a 4.1 inning outing.
