Final Stats
Sixth ranked St. Mary's swept Texas A&M International University in Heartland Conference doubleheader action on Friday afternoon at Jorge Haynes Field on the TAMIU campus. The Rattlers earned a come-from-behind 12-10 win in game one before cruising to an 11-5 win in game two.
TAMIU led 6-0 after three innings in the opener and 7-1 after four innings before St. Mary's erupted for five runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 7-6. Mick Daniels blasted a three-run home run over the right field fence in the bottom of the sixth to push the Dustdevils to a 9-7 lead but it would not be enough.
TAMIU ace John Gonzáles tried to close out the win in the top of the seventh inning but four Rattler hits and four Dustdevil errors produced five runs for St. Mary's, lifting the visiting team to a 12-10 lead. Rattler closer Sammy Rivas retired the Dustdevils in order in the bottom of the seventh to earn his 12th save of the season.
Gonzáles (6-7) took the loss for the Dustdevils while Kyle Bumpas (6-0) earned the win for the Rattlers after allowing one run on two hits in a brief 0.2 inning outing.
St. Mary's (41-8, 26-3 Heartland) scored three runs in the top of the first inning and six runs in the top of the fourth to build an insurmountable 9-0 lead in game two. TAMIU (19-27, 13-13) put four runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the margin to 9-4 but the Dustdevils scored only one run the rest of the game.
Eric Weiser went two for three in the loss, with a two-run home run in the fourth inning and a double in the sixth inning.
Mike McGillivray (4-6) took the loss after allowing nine runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings of work. Andrew Crowe pitched well in a long relief appearance. He allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow with a single game. TAMIU's men's basketball team will be honored at noon for its accomplishment of finishing as Heartland Conference co-champions this season. There will then be a ceremony for baseball Senior Day with first pitch in the series finale scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
