Final Stats
Sixth ranked St. Mary's defeated Texas A&M International University 11-8 in Heartland Conference action on Senior Day at Jorge Haynes Field on Saturday afternoon. The result wrapped up a three-game sweep for the Rattlers over the Dustdevils.
The game started out as a pitching duel between TAMIU's John Gonzáles and StMU's Carl O'Neal but ended up as an offensive slugfest in which the teams combined for 19 runs on 30 hits. St. Mary's used six pitchers in the contest with TAMIU sending five hurlers to the mound.
St. Mary's led 2-1 after five innings before TAMIU took the lead with a three-run bottom of the sixth inning. Chris Collazo got the scoring started in that frame with a bases loaded walk. Two batters later, Mick Daniels provided the Dustdevils a 4-2 lead with a two-RBI single to right field.
The Dustdevil lead did not last long, however, with St. Mary's (42-8, 27-3 Heartland) scoring nine runs on seven hits in the top of the seventh to take a commanding 11-4 lead. TAMIU (19-28, 13-14) helped the Rattler cause in the seventh by committing three costly errors leading to six unearned runs.
The Dustdevils rallied for four runs on five hits in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 11-8 but St. Mary's relief pitchers Jonathan Pérez and Sammy Rivas combined to allow two TAMIU hits the rest of the way with only one runner reaching scoring position.
Collazo led TAMIU's hit parade with four hits. Austin Voros and Daniels contributed three hits apiece.
Kyle Bumpas (7-0) earned the win for St. Mary's with Gonzáles (6-8) taking the loss for the Dustdevils.
