Dustdevils Split With Lions In Non-Conference Doubleheader

April 8, 2011

Final Stats

Texas A&M International University split a non-conference doubleheader with Arkansas-Fort Smith on Friday afternoon at Jorge Haynes Field on campus. TAMIU won the opener 6-5 in 10 innings and UAFS took the second game 4-2 in a seven-inning contest.

TAMIU trailed by two runs twice in the opener before pulling out the win in a game scheduled for seven innings. The Dustdevils trailed 3-1 before a two-run homer by Chris Collazo evened the score in the third inning and trailed 5-3 going into the bottom of the fifth inning before tying the score on a RBI double by Austin Voros and a RBI ground out by Will Wurth.

Both teams threatened to score after the fifth but the Dustdevils finally did break through with the game-winning run on a RBI sac fly by Eric Weiser in the bottom of the tenth inning. Will Wurth started off the 10th inning with a single to center field. He then stole second before reaching third on a sac bunt by Zeke Sosa.

UAFS intentionally walked Sean Smedley to set up a potential inning-ending double play but Weiser squashed those hopes with a fly ball to deep enough to right field to easily score Wurth.

Danny Navarro (3-4) got the win in a long relief appearance. He allowed no runs on two hits in 3.0 innings of work. A Lion runner reached second base with only out in the top of the tenth but Navarro got out of the jam with two fly outs.

UAFS (14-17) scored three runs on four hits in the top of the fourth inning of the second game against Dustdevil ace John Gonzáles to take a 3-1 lead. TAMIU (17-17) would chip away for one run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sac fly by Ramon Sandoval but that would be the final run of the game for the home team.

The Dustdevils managed only one hit and only one runner reached scoring position after the fourth inning.

Gonzáles (6-4) took the loss for the Dustdevils. He allowed four runs on eight hits in a seven-inning complete-game effort.

The Dustdevils and Lions will conclude their series on Saturday at Jorge Haynes Field. There will a special Military Appreciation Ceremony at 11:45 a.m. and first pitch is scheduled for noon.
