St. Mary's Defeats TAMIU In Heartland Conference Opener

Fourth ranked and top seeded St. Mary's rolled to an 18-8 win over Texas A&M International University in the opening round of the Heartland Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon at V.J. Keefe Stadium on the StMU campus in San Antonio. The game ended early due to the 10-run rule after seven innings played.

TAMIU opened the game with three straight singles and ended up scoring four runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. St. Mary's responded to the early deficit by scoring 13 unanswered runs to build an insurmountable 13-4 lead after three innings.

St. Mary's starter Matt Holland (11-1) earned the win after allowing seven runs on nine hits in 6.0 innings of work. He struck out five and walked five batters.

John Gonzáles (6-9) took the loss for the Dustdevils. He allowed nine runs on 10 hits in a brief 2.1 inning outing.

TAMIU returns to action with an elimination game against St. Edward's on Saturday. First pitch between the Dustdevils and Hilltoppers is scheduled for noon. The winner of that game will play a second elimination game tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
