Hilltoppers Sweep Dustdevils In Heartland Conference Doubleheader Action

May 6, 2011

Final Stats

St. Edward's swept Texas A&M International University in Heartland Conference doubleheader action on Saturday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field on the SEU campus in South Austin. The Hilltoppers took game one 6-2 before claiming a 7-6 win in 11 innings in game two.

Trailing 1-0 in the opener, TAMIU loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third inning but could push across a run. St. Edward's responded by scoring four runs on five hits in the bottom of the third to take a 5-0 lead.

Rey Alvarez and Austin Voros contributed RBI singles in the top of the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 5-2 but that's as close as the Dustdevils would get for the game.

Danny Alejandro (2-3) took the loss for TAMIU. He allowed five runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings of work.

Will McCaleb hit a two-run walk off home run to left center in the bottom of the eleventh inning in game two for St. Edward's (24-22, 18-11 Heartland).

SEU's come-from-behind win in the second game can mainly be attributed to TAMIU's defensive struggles. Six Dustdevil errors led to four unearned Hilltopper runs, causing starter John Gonzáles to get a no decision despite contributing one of the gutsiest pitching performances in TAMIU baseball history.

Gonzáles gave up only one earned run in 9.0 innings with five strikeouts and two walks but left the game after the ninth inning with the score tied 5-5. He threw 150 pitches and was physically unable to go return to the mound for the 10th inning.

Will Wurth provided TAMIU (19-30, 13-16) a 6-5 lead with a RBI single in the top of the eleventh but SEU won the game in dramatic action in the bottom of the frame on the walk off homer by McCaleb.

TAMIU finished with 17 hits in the loss, with at least one hit in all 11 innings. The Dustdevils left 13 runners on base compared to 15 for the Hilltoppers.

James Santillan (2-4) took the loss for the Dustdevils.
