Tough Shooting Night Costs Dustdevils Second Straight Loss

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Texas A&M International University Women's Basketball team turned in their worst shooting performance of the season Thursday night, finishing at just 27 percent in a 73-59 loss to St. Mary's. The Dustdevils were never able to find their rhythm versus the Rattlers, hitting just 4-29 shots in the first half (13.8 percent) and 13-34 shots in the second (38.2 percent).

"This was a very frustrating loss," said Head Coach David Beaver. "You can't shoot as poorly as we did and win games. We were out of sync on the offensive end and we got beat on the glass all night. We tried to put a run together to start the second half and we just couldn't get over the hump. I wish the effort we put forth in the last few minutes of the game, would've been present all night. We have to stop battling inconsistency in our intensity."

As they did in their previous game, the Dustdevils came out strong taking an 8-4 lead at the 13:33 mark, off a three from Amanda Mangan. But the lead didn't last long. With the game tied at 17 with 7:41 remaining, the Rattlers closed the half on an 18-2 run grabbing a 16-point halftime lead (35-19).

In the second half the Dustdevils cut the lead down to ten points (38-28) off a Mangan jumper, then to nine (47-38) off a bucket by Linda Banuelos, but that's as close as they would get for the remainder of the game. The Rattlers pushed their lead out to as many as 22 points, before cruising to a 73-59 win.

Amanda Mangan tied her season high pouring in 21 points for TAMIU on 7-13 shooting, including 4-7 shooting from three-point range. Nikkitti Scott and Linda Banuelos were the next highest scorers for the Dustdevils finishing with nine and eight points respectively. The Dustdevils were out-rebounded 55-34 and committed 19 turnovers.

TAMIU falls to 2-4 in Heartland Conference play (10-10 overall), with their next game scheduled for February 2 versus St. Edward in Laredo at 5:30 p.m.
