Jan. 7, 2012

Final Stats

Texas A&M International University achieved a come-from-behind 74-67 Heartland Conference win over St. Edward's on Saturday in Austin. The Dustdevils trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half but held a one-point lead with a little over four minutes left in regulation before going on a 12-6 run to earn their first Heartland Conference win of the season. There were 12 ties and nine lead changes in the back-and-forth game.

Sophomore Samantha Chacon scored eight of the 12 points during the game-ending run. Her lay-up at the 1:52 mark pushed TAMIU (9-7, 1-1 Heartland) to an insurmountable 72-62 lead.

Chacon made seven on nine field attempts (three of three 3-pointers) and six of seven free throw attempts to finish with a team-high 23 points. She also finished with a team-high two blocks and two steals.

Jennifer Johnson contributed 16 points and a team-high nine rebounds and Nikkiti Scott finished with eight points and three rebounds with ReNikia Meshack pitching in with seven points and four rebounds.

Head coach David Beaver was thrilled with the manner in which his team hung in the game.

"We were pretty awful at the start with a hangover from Thursday's game," Beaver said.

"But we are a resilient group and battled back. Jennifer Johnson was absolutely huge grabbing rebounds and big shots. Samantha was clutch again and our crowd was awesome and pushed us over the top."

TAMIU will try to return to action next weekend with Heartland Conference road games at Newman on Thursday and Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday.
