Women’s Basketball falls to Incarnate Word

By Winston Harris

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas (December 8) - Despite outscoring the Cardinals in the second half, the TAMIU women’s basketball team fell to Incarnate Word University Saturday afternoon 67-77 at the McDermott Center in San Antonio.  The loss drops the Dustdevils overall record of 3-7 on the season.

“We did some got things tonight and we competed,” said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. “The problem was we gave up too many offensive rebounds that led to easy baskets, more possessions for them, and we often times fouled in those situations which were killers. “

The Cardinals were lead by Rose Whitehead’s 24 points, ten of them coming off of free throws.  Ifunanya Mora’s double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds was followed up by Michelle Hale’s double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.

TAMIU was not able to get it going from the free throw line as they made three of ten attempts as compared to the cardinals outstanding 32 of 36 attempts.

“We put them to the free throw line way too much and they knocked them down,” said Coach Bento-Jackson.  “We must fix these two areas of concern in order for us to be successful. We played good half court defense and then we would give up an offensive board. The bottom line is we had too many mistakes in order to win.”

Tina Dang led the Dustdevils with 22 points, shooting 8-18 with six three points field goals in 40 minutes. Samantha Chacon added 14 points to go along with five assists, while Amanda Mangan kicked in ten points.

The Dustdevils started off with a strong 10-6 lead over the Cardinals, which was capped off by one of Dang’s six three-point field goals.  After leading through ten minutes of the opening half, Incarnate tied the game up at 19-19 on a three ball by Katie Novak. The Dustdevils tried to get things going offensively, but turnovers would put them at a 30-19 disadvantage with eight minutes to go in the first half. A lay-up by Amanda Magan cut the deficit to seven, 32-25, which would be the closest the Dustdevils would get in the first half as Incarnate lead 40-29 at the break.

The Cardinals continued to score at the free throw line and extended the lead to 12 points at the 15:16 mark of the second half. But the Dustdevils were able to crawl back to within four at 47-43, thanks to back-to-back three’s from Dang and Chacon.

After a Cardinal bucket by Joslinn Douglas, a 5-0 scoring run by Samantha Chacon closed the gap to 50-48 at the nine minute mark. But 31 team fouls for the Dustdevils ultimately prevented them from a comeback as they succumbed to the Cardinals 67-77.

The Dustdevils will back on their home court hosting Lone star conference opponent Angelo State December 18th at 7 p.m. at the TAMIU KCB in Laredo.
