Dustdevils Win Series Opener Against Oklahoma Panhandle State

Feb. 11, 2012

Final Stats

Texas A&M International University edged Oklahoma Panhandle State 3-2 in the first game of a Heartland Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Jorge Haynes Field on the TAMIU campus. The second game was suspended due to darkness in the bottom of the tenth inning with the score tied 8-8 and TAMIU having a runner on first with two outs. That contest will resume tomorrow at noon, prior to the final game of the series.

OPSU took the lead in the opening game by scoring two runs on two hits in the top of the fourth inning against Dustdevil starter Manolo Mendoza.

TAMIU started to chip away at the lead by scoring on a RBI single by Alex Salas in the fifth inning to cut the Aggie lead to 2-1. With one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning Jeff Anderson popped out on a behind the back catch by the OPSU second baseman but a throwing error to home plate after that catch allowed Jeremy Olivo to score and tie the game 2-2.

Austin Voros lead off the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk. He would advance to third base with two outs when Ramon Sandoval came to the plate in a clutch situation. The junior from United High School delivered by hitting a shot to third base that could not be handled by Aggie third baseman Dillon Doucette, allowing Voros to cross the plate with the winning run.

Danny Navarro (1-0) earned the win in a relief role after allowing only one hit with one strikeout and no walks in a 3.1 inning outing. Mendoza allowed two runs on three hits in his 3.2 innings of work.
