Final Stats
LAREDO, Texas - The powerful Rambelles lineup scored 15 runs on 22 hits Tuesday afternoon, as the Texas A&M International University softball team dropped a pair of game to no. 16 Angelo State University. The Belles earned a game one victory 9-6, before holding off the Dustdevils in game two 6-2.
In the opening game, the Dustdevils trailed 3-1 after two innings before the Belles scored four runs on two errors, two passed balls and a wild pitch in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead. The Dustdevils bats finally came to life in the bottom half of the inning, when sophomore Emily Smith blasted her first homer of the season, a two-run shot over the wall in left center. However the momentum was short-lived as the Belles countered in the fifth, scoring two runs extending their lead to 9-3.
Alexis Gonzalez got things going for TAMIU in the sixth, lining a two-bagger into right center and two batters later pinch hitter Regina Morales followed suit with TAMIU's second double of the inning, plating Gonzalez and cutting the lead to 9-4. After Morales advanced to third on a wild pitch, Smith struck again with her second homer of the game, this time going deep over the center field wall pulling the Dustdevils within striking distance (9-6).
In their final attempt at a comeback, the Dustdevils were able to load up the bases in the bottom of the seventh with two away, but Regina Morales struck out swinging to end the game.
Deeshana Tafiti was the story of game two, blasting two homeruns that would put the game out of reach for TAMIU. The first was a two-run bomb in the third, part of a three run inning to give Angelo the early lead. The second came in the fifth, another two-run shot to put the game away for good.
Mariena Gallardo got the loss for the Dustdevils in game one falling to 0-3 on the season, while Sarah Johnson took the loss in game two dropping to 2-2.
The Dustdevils slip to 3-10 with the losses and will look to get back on track as they head to San Antonio to battle Incarnate Word on February 16 in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. with game two set to get underway at 3:30.
