Final Stats
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The early season woes continue for the Texas A&M International University softball team as Incarnate Word took back to back games against the Dustdevils 7-1 and 5-1 at Cardinal Field Thursday afternoon.
TAMIU committed four errors in game one and three in game two, managing only eight total hits and two runs in the doubleheader. The Dustdevils have dropped eight straight and stand at 3-12 overall.
In the opening game Whitney Waltrip gave Incarnate Word a 2-0 lead in the third, belting a two-run homer over the left field wall for her first homerun of the season. In the fifth the Cardinals broke the game open, capitalizing on a Dustdevil error and scoring five runs on six hits to take a 7-0 lead.
TAMIU scored their only run of the game in the seventh, stringing together four consecutive base hits. Alexis Gonzalez got the rally going with a one-out single to center field, followed by singles from Sam Carrillo, Regina Morales, and Nikki Salazar. Pinch runner Desiree Ortiz was thrown out at third on the final single of the inning and pinch hitter Emily Smith struck out looking to end the Dustdevils chances at a comeback.
In the nightcap, the Cardinals took advantage of three Dustdevils errors and a wild pitch in the fourth, scoring four runs on only one hit. With one away, Melanie Padilla took first on an error by third baseman Sam Carrillo followed by another error from second baseman Alexis Gonzalez to give the Cardinals two base runners. Two consecutive walks gave Incarnate Word their first lead of the game, before Shelby Waltrip doubled down the left field line plating two more runs. Another error by shortstop Kristen LaBuhn allowed Incarnate Word to keep the inning going, before Kim Hanson scored on a wild pitch.
The Dustdevils got their only run of the game in the fifth thanks to a sac fly from Lauren Tucker scoring Regina Morales, but the Cardinals answered with another run in the bottom half of the inning and would go on for the 5-1 win.
The Dustdevils will continue their grueling 23-game road trip heading to Wichita Falls, Texas to partake in the Midwestern State Tournament. TAMIU will open tournament play versus Fort Hays State at 3p.m., followed by an 8 p.m. game versus Missouri Southern.
