Feb. 18, 2012

Final Stats

FORT SMITH, Arkansas - The Texas A&M International University baseball team slipped to 5-3 on the season, losing both games of a doubleheader to Arkansas Fort-Smith Thursday afternoon at Crowder Field.

The Lions took game one by a slim 4-3 margin, before nabbing game two 6-3.

Game one:

With the Dustdevils trailing by one (3-2), Korey Gosselin and Roberto Castillo teamed up in the sixth to even the game at three. Gosselin got things going with a one-out double into left field and pinch runner Jeremy Olivo scored on a single up the middle by Castillo, who was pinch hitting for Mick Daniels.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Lions capitalized on a costly Dustdevil error, allowing lead-off hitter Steven Ross to reach base. Two batters later, Taylor Shaddy singled scoring pinch runner Curtis Clark for the go-ahead run. TAMIU was unable to get anything going in the seventh and fell just short 4-3.

Dustdevil hurler Manolo Mendoza suffered his first loss of the season, giving up four hits and three earned runs through five innings of work.

Game Two:

TAMIU led 1-0 through two innings, but the Lions put together four runs in the third and two more in the fourth to put the Dustdevils away. TAMIU got one run back in the sixth off a Ramon Sandoval homerun and another in the eighth thanks to a fielder's choice, but that's all they would get in the 6-3 loss.

Danny Alejandro was the losing pitcher in game two giving up five hits and six earned runs through only 3.2 innings of work.

The Dustdevils will look to salvage game three of the series Saturdayafternoon. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
